Kotnet is a project of the K.U.Leuven University that officially started in 1997. The goal was to provide access to KULeuvenNet and the internet to as many students and K.U.Leuven personnel in Leuven as possible. In 1999 a logon-mechanism is introduced. From that moment on users had to authentify themselves with a username and password to gain access to Kotnet.

The KotNET AutoLogin project started in 2003. At that time the only purpose was to provide automatic logon to the Kotnet-network at boot time. A few other automatic logon applications for Windows already existed, but most were started through the "Startup folder" and none could logon to the Kotnet network in the pre-system-logon phase, an annoying lack for servers. By developing KotNET AutoLogin as a Windows Service this requirement was achieved.

In 2005 the Kotnet-network began to accept students from EHSAL, GroepT, KHLeuven and W&K in addition to the existent K.U.Leuven students. Due to many requests to make KotNET AutoLogin also available to this user group, KotNET AutoLogin was redesigned from scratch and KotNET AutoLogin 2.0 was born. A more user-friendly GUI was designed, and a lot of additional features as a DNS-updater and a built-in DHCP-controller (for Windows Servers that complains about not having static addresses) were added. In March 2006 support for KHBO, KUBrussel students and personnel and Sint Lucas was added.
